The drama/thriller LIMBO (1999) is no exception. It starts off with «Lift Me Up» by Bruce Springsteen, a somber, ethereal ballad in the «Philadelphia» mold, with The Boss’s voice as high and thin as a candle’s flame. Three of the songs here are cover tunes sung by one of the movie’s stars, Mary Elizabeth Mastroantonio, and lest one think, «another actress that thinks she’s a singer,» think again. Her singing is a revelation: strong, assured, womanly rather than girlish, and earthy, in the style of Bonnie Raitt, Marcia Ball and Rory Block. The original music by Mason Daring is sparse and atmospheric, yet grounded by bluesy guitar and down-home dulcimer playing, suiting the film’s Alaskan setting. The album LIMBO makes for a good experience apart from the movie.
