Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: Greatest Hits
12-track compilation released in the US and Canada only with different catalogue numbers (COL 88697 43930 2 and COL 88697 46550 2, respectively). While US copies – whose inner packaging featured a code to download a free mp3 of the “Working On A Dream” album track “My Lucky Day” – were exclusively available at “Walmart” department stores and through the “Walmart” website, the Canadian pressing (minus download offer) was issued for general, unlimited distribution. Apart from its unique cover artwork, this CD is also notable for marking the first official release of studio material credited to both Springsteen and the E Street Band. Featured tracks: Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) / Born To Run / Thunder Road / Darkness On The Edge Of Town / Badlands / Hungry Heart / Glory Days / Dancing In The Dark / Born In The U.S.A. / The Rising / Lonesome Day / Radio Nowhere. Album notes
On Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band’s GREATEST HITS, the «Greatest» part is largely undeniable, but «Hits» is technically a misnomer, since some of these songs barely dented the Top 40, and some weren’t even singles. That said, with the exception of latter-day tracks «Lonesome Day» and «Radio Nowhere,» these are undoubtedly some of the most iconic tunes in Springsteen’s mighty canon. From the loose, Bob Dylan-meets-Van Morrison rush of early tracks like «Rosalita» to the intense, trenchant drive of «Dancing in the Dark» and «Born in the U.S.A.,» this is Springsteen and the E Street Band (as opposed to Springsteen the solo artist) at their most essential and unforgettable.
