The inlay card to The String Quartet Tribute to Bruce Springsteen asserts that the «string ensemble’s renditions of the Boss’ classic songs are a magnetic field that blow you away recklessly.» It’s not clear what that exactly means, but the 11 Springsteen originals that appear here as instrumentals performed on violin, viola, and cello do lend themselves quite well to the chamber format. «Thunder Road»‘s melody is even more poignant and urging here, and a cello adds an emotional backbone to the hopeful strains of «Atlantic City.» Best is «Mansion on the Hill,» which is reimagined by violinist Eric Gorfain as an Americana lament worthy of Stephen Foster. When the song’s plaintive chords conjure images of a Civil War battlefield at dawn, the importance of Springsteen’s legacy becomes clear. ~ Johnny Loftus
