Forever better-known for being Mrs. Bruce Springsteen than for her own music, Patti Scialfa owes more musically to a kindred foxy redhead, Bonnie Raitt. The pop-rock of PLAY IT AS IT LAYS has a bluesy edge akin to Raitt’s that suits Scialfa’s admirably careworn voice. Named after Joan Didion’s starkly depressing novel but bearing a joyful feel out of the Stax Records studios, PLAY IT AS IT LAYS features the rollicking first single «Looking For Elvis,» the equally powerful strutter «Town Called Heartbreak,» and the moody piano ballad «The Word.»
Editorial Reviews
3 stars out of 5 — Scialfa’s third is the most complete and satisfying of her career, the lyrical candour matched by the open-ended optimism of the band…
Uncut
3.5 stars out of 5 — [O]n these tightly focused, grown-up vignettes about sin and salvation and the hard-fought struggles for honesty in a relationship, she slurs and bebops like Rickie Lee Jones.
